One of the finest guitar players : Mr. Jim Hall (born 1930 Buffalo NY) is truly a jazz legend.

Looking for some material from Mr. Howard Roberts we found an old record from Ahmad Jamal with Howard Roberts "The Bright The Blue and The Beautiful". 

 Ahmad Jamal (1930-2023) is praised and knocked down for his music.

 Some critics say 

1. Ahmad Jamal is no important musician (Wiki USA)

 2. Most important pianist after 1945 (Wiki Netherlands) 

3. Jamal is a nice barpianist (Wiki Germany). 

 We heard the Mosaic box with Ahmad Jamal's Arco period.

We are sorry to say we don't think Jamal is a great pianist. 

Also his usage of "space", fingersettings , understatement and crack in the vinyl effect is sometimes very weird.

 But judge by yourself this week by Toppyjazz. 

 Ledisi Young (1972-New Orleans)  is our second musician and what a great voice.

 Special listen to her fantastic version of Straight no Chaser. Highly recommanded!

Deze week de in 1937 in Oslo geboren Noorse zangeres Karin Krog en de in 1925 in Leipzig geboren Duitse pianiste Jutta Hipp. Jutta overleed in 2003 in New York.

 Jutta werd door criticus Leonard Feather in de jaren 50 de hemel in geprezen.

 De cd's en platen van Jutta zijn nu peperduur geworden. Cd box met foto's (uitgave Bear Records) kost maar liefst meer dan € 160,00 !

 Wie kent nog de symphatieke Manfred Krug (1937-2016), jarenlang het boegbeeld van de NDR afleveringen van Tatort?

 Vooral zijn zingende bijdragen samen met collega Charles Brauer zijn erg geliefd.

The Real Group & WDR Big Band (Toppyjazz276)

Toppyjazz bezoekt deze week The Real Group een zweedse a-capella group. 

Ze bestaan al 25 jaar, maar hun muziek is ,omdat veel van hun repertoire in het zweeds is, niet altijd even toegankelijk.

 U krijgt een overzicht met onze keus uit de beste albums. 

 Het laatste half uur is voor zangeres Cecile Verny met de WDR Big Band. 

Cecile is in 1969 geboren in Ivoorkust.Ze woont sinds 1989 in Freiburg im Breisgau

Onze oosterburen schijnen te grossieren in top orkesten. Zowel de NDR, WDR, SWR en RBB hebben eigen orkesten met topmusici. 

Bij de opnamen met Cecile Verny was Mike Abene de dirigent.

Ella Fitzgerald Live (deel 2)(Toppyjazz273)

In onze eerste uitzending over Ella Fitzgerald (1917-1996) in 2008 namen we u mee naar de Songbook Albums van Ella. 

 We kregen van een Toppyjazz fan maar liefst 97 albums binnen van Ella. 

Onze discotheek telt nu 239 lp's en cd's, dus we kunnen even vooruit. 

 Daarom deze week een greep uit de LIVE albums van Ella Fitzgerald: Zoals misschien wel haar beste "live"album en wel Ella Fitzgerald in Berlijn uit 1960. 

Haar improvisatie van Mack The Knife, (nadat ze de tekst vergat), is buitengewoon.

 Er zijn weinig vocalisten die haar dat kunnen nadoen.

Om maar niet te spreken over haar uitspraak: haar engels is altijd goed verstaanbaar!

Het Hoge Noorden (deel 2)(Toppyjazz 272)

Het is weer tijd voor ons jaarlijkse bezoek aan het Hoge Noorden. U hoort muziek van het album Swedish Jazz Maid in Sweden. (Ja, ook de zweden hebben soms moeite met engels!). Veel aandacht voor Quincy Jones en Harry Arnold. U hoort een schokkend verhaal over trompetist Joe Newman (1922-1992). Op een plaat van hem stond een foto van hem en zijn zweedse vrouw. Dat pikten de amerikanen niet! De hoes werd uit de handel genomen, omdat ****The original image of Counting Five in Sweden depicted (black) trumpeter Joe Newman with his (white) wife Rigmor (the mixed, or interracial, union was considered an obstacle to the sale of the album…)****.  

 Zo mochten zangeres Anita O'Day(blank) en trompetist Roy Eldridge (zwart) alleen zingen op flinke afstand van elkaar op het podium. De plaatselijk autoriteiten in 1960 gaven anders geen toestemming voor het optreden. Ook is een plaat van Ornette Coleman met op de hoes BILL of Rights (een plaat bij Impulse) nooit uitgegeven. Sterker nog! Laat de plaat nu helemaal onvindbaar zijn!

Americans Swinging in Paris (Toppyjazz aflevering 269)

Er verscheen van EMI France een 20 delige serie Americans Swinging in Paris. Pluspunt is dat de cd hoezen mooi zijn ontworpen. De inhoud is echter wel erg mager. Iets meer dan 10 uur muziek op 20 cd's. Bij de serie van Swinging Hamburg van Membran Music kreeg u 24 uur muziek op 18 cd's. De muziekkeus is ook erg vreemd, bijna allemaal opnamen uit de jaren 30 tot 70 van de vorige eeuw. het lijkt dat EMI weer meer oog heeft voor geld dan voor een goed muziekaanbod.
